PS. Excuse this scroll, for I write on my knees.

Back of letter:

1) October 10, 1790. Old Callabar. J.P. Degravers.

* This letter deals about the slave ship Pearl, but it also mentions the ships Sarah and Daniel. Both these ships were also owned by James Rogers.

6. Captain William Blake to James Rogers*

Old Calabar, December 19, 1790

C107/12

Context: Captain Wilding of the ship Pearl is dead and Samuel Stribling has been made captain. The ship will leave Old Calabar before the end of December. The slaves are sickly. Captain Blake reports on the incompetence of the ship’s doctor. He complains that the delay of the ship Daniel has negatively impacted his ability to trade.

Old Calabar, 19 Dec. 1790

Sir,

This my 5th conveyance p[er] favour of the ship Liverpool Captain Smyths [sic] ship,12 to acquaint you that the Pearl will sail in all this Month but not quite full of slaves. I believe we have been very sickly and buried 131 men, 45 Woman slaves and still bur[y]ing. Am sorry to say [Captain] Wilding is dead and several more. Our ship now is very short of hands which is mostly the case with the other ships – Mr. Stribling must go [as] Master of the ship. To keep the Pearl here would ruin ever thing [sic] as we are burying of slaves and buryed [sic] so many.

Our Doctor is short of the judgement he pretended to have. He is not suitable to slaves. [Richard] Martin staying so long on the Windward coast has hurted [sic] our voyage to a great Degree. I stay to purchase what number I can for the Daniell [sic] as a schooner belonging to the Duke tell his arivel [sic]. Palm Oil has been very scarce. Suppose the Triton will sail by 10 of next month.

The Master of the Triton now has not behaved well here. There is at present Captain Fairweather13 & Capt[ain] Cumberbush & 1 French Ship. The[y] have but few slaves on board. Smyths has met another tender in the river; Jolly & Smyths [sic] las[t] vessell [sic] carry eleven – 5 & 6 hundred slaves off.

Inclosed [sic] with a list of Deaths since my last.

Am Sir your H[umble] Ser[vant],

William Blake
